(Single) (Pop)

This is the latest release from Gorillaz’s latest project, the Song Machine, which seems to be eventually culminating in a full album release in late October.

What makes this single so special is it features Robert Smith, legendary frontman of The Cure, on vocals (along with Damon Albarn, of course). It is comforting to know that the nasally tone that Smith has sported for the duration of his career, is still there; he truly has one of the most recognizable voices in my book.

The track itself takes a lot of inspiration from its aesthetic (or possibly vice versa), which—judging by the music video—is one of space travel. This aesthetic is shown through the absolute atmosphere of the track, the plunky keyboard lines, and the xylophones scales which sound like something directly out of a space movie from the previous decade.

The title of the track itself, as well as its lyrics seem to point to a feeling of being lost within ‘strange times’, which is a feeling that everyone can relate to in this time in which we find ourselves in. This is definitely a track born out of the events of this year.

Overall, while not being one of my favorites of the tracks Gorillaz has released in 2020 so far, it is still a fun track, and definitely worth a listen. Next month, near the actual album’s release, keep a look out for a post where I rank the Gorillaz’s 2020 singles from worst to best!
