(Single) (Metalcore) (Pop)

Bring Me The Horizon, a metalcore/pop band from Sheffield, England, are back with their second single of 2020. This one is called Obey, and features fellow Brit, Yungblud, on the track, as their sounds combine to form a song that reminds me heavily of the way Bring Me The Horizon sounded just six years ago.
The album that introduced me to the band was their 2013 LP named Sempiternal, an intense mixture of pop and metalcore that has remained one of my favorite metalcore albums of the last ten years. It is packed with anthems like “Shadow Moses” and “Sleepwalking”, which helped solidify the band’s place as one of the most popular metalcore bands currently releasing music. Even so, they did departure from the sound slightly as time went on.
Their 2019 album ’amo’, does feature many classic-sounding BMTH tracks, but also mixes some samples and other non-metalcore instrumentation and, overall, most tracks on the album are extremely enjoyable. Perhaps, the biggest departure from their established sound was their second 2019 release, “Music to listen to~...”, which dove more into their electronic music influences, leaving behind a lot of their metal influences, and even embracing non-lyrical tracks as well. Overall, it was an album that, while I can appreciate the band’s effort, seems too far out of place within the band’s discography.
The band’s latest single, however, seems to be a welcome return to the sounds they have explored in the past. Once again, we have another BMTH anthem fitted with screaming vocals, some EDM-esque line supported by the groove of the heavily distorted guitars. Even, the chorus, which is perhaps not one of my favorite’s that the band has written, is catchy enough, and is supported by booming chords in the backdrop of the song, just like the band’s other anthems.
I also think that all of the performances on the track are pretty good! Even Yungblud, whose singing voice I am not the biggest fan of, sports a good scream that almost matches the screaming vocals of Oli Sykes, the lead singer for Bring Me the Horizon.
