(Album) (Death Metal)
Necrot is a Californian death metal band, formed in 2011, who gained underground attention throughout the 2010s which eventually culminated in a deal with the record label, Tankcrimes. Through them, the band released a compilation of their pre-2016 EP’s, as well as their first full-length studio release in 2017, Blood Offerings, which was received warmly within the metal community. Now, in 2020, following the release of three singles, the band releases the sophomore LP, Mortal.
Upon first listen, you may realize that Necrot sounds just as heavy as they did on their previous album. They are very much so a band that believes in keeping their albums packed with aggression and noise; they do not give the listeners a break for the entirety of the album’s 38-minute runtime. That being said, this album lacks some of the ‘studio polish’ that their previous album had, resulting in a sound that appears slightly rawer to the ears, and more pointed compared to the fuller, more resonant sound that they championed on their prior LP.
Lyrically, the band explores themes related to the album’s visceral cover, which depicts humans casting off their skin into the depths of some hellish landscape. The second track, “Dying Life”, perhaps lyrically embodies the cover the best, talking about “being trapped” in one’s skin, your body making you a “servant of time” because it will eventually die, and relates it all back to the opening track, “Your Hell”, which talks about living in a personal Hell.
FAVORITE TRACKS: Dying Life, Asleep Forever, Sinister Will.
