(Single) (Electronic Music) (Instrumental)

This is the first single off of John Frusciante’s upcoming eleventh album release, Maya, which is named after his cat, who recently passed away.
Frusciante, to provide a quick recap, is probably best known for his work in the band Red Hot Chili Peppers, playing guitar on some of their most well known albums like Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and Californication. This single actually comes hot off the heels of the band’s recent announcement that Frusciante would be rejoining for future projects and performances. With all of that being said, however, Frusciante has been released solo projects since the 90’s, often while also being in the Chili Peppers.
His solo work has varied, but his 2000’s output, as well as his 2010’s, has primarily focused on experimental, glitchy, sometimes more pop-oriented electronic music. The sound captured in this latest single is no exception, as it is a soundscape characterized by its random distorted noises, its wavering synth underbelly, and its Zach Hill-esque drumming. All of these experimental sounds fall in front of simplistic electronic arpeggios, and a booming bass. Although I wish some moments hit harder, and that others were not so compressed, I must say that compared to some of his other releases, this is one of the better produced tracks.
The other key difference of this track when compared to his previous ones, is that this a completely instrumental track. Frusciante has been quoted with saying along with the track’s release, that writing lyrics has not been a major focus of his recently, preferring to focus on the instrumental more.
